In the Beginning

5/05  The Voice of Reason came about due to the positive feedback I received on the columns I wrote on Turnbuckle’s Megafest and Gary Hart’s Last Weekend On The Road.  The feedback I received was how the fans enjoyed the honesty of the behind the scenes events that transpired those weekends.  Before I go any further by no means am I saying that I’m this big time promoter that has so much to say.  What I’m saying is that when I was on the other side of the fence I always wanted to hear about the stuff that goes on behind the scenes.  The problem was that no one wanted to give me any insight into those kinds of things.  The wrestling business as we all know is a very secretive business.  With all that being said I’m here to try and change that just a little bit and let the fans see what the other side is all about.  I will try and give a small insight into what is like dealing with all the different people and personalities in this wacky rasslin’ business.  I was a fan for 27 years before I got involved in wrestling and still am today as I watch every show each week.

This brings me to May 2005 when the wheels for K&S Wrestlefest were first put into motion.  That was the month that Ken and I took our rinky dink video camera and conducted our first two shoot interviews.  The first one was with Kid Kasha just after he was released form TNA.  Kash was all business, mostly interested in finishing the interview and his payday.  He took some shots at Styles, Americas Most Wanted and it was interesting for Kash fans.  I’m not saying that Kid was a bad guy or anything but it was an ok experience.  A week later we conducted our second shoot this time with Trinity.  Trinity was friendly through out the time we worked with her and was a pleasure to be around.  This was another decent interview but nothing earth shattering.  The pretty cool thing about both these interviews was that they were conducted in Trinity’s Long Island home as her and Kash were an item at that time.  To this day Ken still sees Trinity and Kash at his place of business.  We were able to sell both of these shoots to Highspots which was a very positive thing since we just started out.  These early shoots would be a springboard for future projects with both Highspots and RF Video.  It should be noted that Ken was the main interviewer on these shoots.  It would shortly after this that I would take over as the “Voice” of K&S Wrestlefest.

Shortly after the completion of these two projects is when Ken came to me with his longtime dream of running a wrestling convention.  This is something that Ken wanted to due so who was I to stand in his way.  So we jumped both feet in and started to climb the mountain of a task known as “Wrestlefest 05”.  To this day that task gives me some major nightmares.  Check back soon to see if that nightmare became a dream come true.

To Be Continued in “Nightmare or Sweet Dream”?

Gary Hart's Last Weekend On The Road

3/19/08   I don't know even where to begin as I sit here in total shock.  I just heard the news that "Playboy" Gary Hart had passed away on Sunday afternoon.  This hits very close to home with Ken and I as we spent Friday and Saturday with him.  Gary was in great mood and seemed to be feeling well on this trip as he spent time with old friends of his Bill Irwin and Skandor Akbar.  I'm not going to go over Gary's career here because I'm sure everyone knows how much he did in this business.  What I will do is tell you all about Gary's last weekend on the road and as he put it "the good old days traveling down the road with good friends".

The weekend started Friday afternoon as we picked of Gary, Bill and Skandor at Philadelphia Airport and headed for Allentown P.A.  This was like a true lovefest between these three old friend as they couldn't stop talking about the good times they spent together.  They talked about storylines, talent, friends, foes and whatever you can think of.  It was a great time for us as we just sat back and listened to all the old stories which was so much fun.  When we got to Allentown, Gary was to be meeting Kayfabe Commentaries to do a guest booker piece but I had to call Sean and tell him that it would have to wait because these three buddies wanted to have dinner together first.  The fun continued for us all as we headed for a steakhouse and enjoyed some more old days talk.  Gary talked about how proud of his two sons he was and enjoyed the time he spends with them.  I wouldn't even know where to start to tell you about all the stories they told as there were so many.  After a long fun filled dinner we dropped Gary off to do his guest booker piece and told him we would talk later.  Later Friday night Gary called us and said all went well with the piece and he would see us in the morning.

Saturday morning started as we went to pick Gary up at his hotel and sat down for a quick breakfast with him.  The first thing he asked me was did I drink and handed me a bottle of Crown Royal which he told me to enjoy.  He said it was given to him by Sean last night at the guest booker piece but he had a couple of drinks but couldn't bring it on the plane and didn't want to waste such a generous gift.  That is just the kind of guy that Gary was always thinking about everyone.  Gary and I had a convesation about how he couldn't understand why the fans would want to hear about booking.  I told him it's a side that most people have no idea about and it was a huge interest to the fans.  I also told Gary it had alot to do with the way he just mesmerized people when he spoke.  We then headed to Carson's Pro Wrestling World for a Meet & Greet and World Class Ringside Reunion Q&A Session.  The meet and greet went great as Gary, Bill , Skandor and the fans had a wonderful time.  It was now time for the World Class Ringside Reunion Q&A which went over well beyond anything we could have imagined.  The session rolled along great and all questions were answered and old storied were told to the fans.  Gary again showed the person he was as he broke down when a question about Gino Hernandez was asked.  I spoke to Gary about that and he told me talking about Gino is very tough do to with Gino being like a son to him.  The Q&A taping ended with a standing ovation from all in attendance.  We headed back to Philadelphia Airport but not before a trip through the drive up at MacDonalds for a quarter pounder with cheese meal for the "Playboy".  The ride was once again great as old stories were covered the whole way back.  At the airport the three old friends hugged goodbye and Gary told us that he would be it touch soon to work with us again another project.  As Ken and I headed home all we could do is talk about what a great guy and true genius that Gary was.  We also talked about how much Gary did to promote this show for us as he truly wanted us to do well.

As I sit here typing this I get a call from Ken and he tells me he just spoke with Jim (Skandor) about Gary's passing.  Jim was in total shock as Gary appeared to be in fine health to him also.  Jim told Ken that they had a great time on the plane ride home and continued talking about old times.  Jim also said that Gary's two boys were at the airport to pick him up which makes me so very happy.  Jim said that he and Gary both thanked us for putting this reunion together as it was very special to them both.  I think I have covered it all and I hope that everyone can get a small picture of Gary's last days traveling down the road with old friends.

To the Williams (Hart) family:  you will all be in our pray's and heart's at this sad time.

R.I.P.  "Playboy" Gary Hart

The Titanic, Great Depression & Turnbuckle All My Fault ?

10/30/07 This is the letter I wrote to Wrestling Figs in regard to the garbage letter that Jason of Turnbuckle Promotions has sent to have posted on several websites.

Georgie,

It's Steve of K&S.  Hope all is well. Where should begin? or should I even rebut all this nonsense?  What the heck I'm bored and have some time to waste. I must first say that you are a fair, honest and respected person. Your record is top notch and your word will be believed on this crazy matter.  Scott Epstein has been a fair and decent person on all dealing I've had with him.  As I stated in my column that you posted after Turnbuckle MegaFest, I felt Jason was a good person at heart but very overwhelmed by a larger than life event.  Even after Jason's negative statements towards me in his letter, I will add angry and not taking responsibilities to my feeling about him.  It really stinks that he would take shots at me the way he did when all I really tried to do the Turnbuckle weekend was to make his show a success.  I will only be rebutting the things I was involved in and let everyone else respond to the items they feel are incorrect.  I will try to rebut everything in the order of Jason's letter.
Lets begin when Dan Severn arrived he wanted to speak with Jason on the his deal, 8x10's he was promised and a place to set up. I asked Jason to speak with Dan on these matters and the reply I received from Jason was what deal?, no 8x10's and for me to find him a spot.  I explained this to Dan who was very understanding and would make the best of the weekend.  The bigger problem was there were no tables left for him.  I gave up one of K&S's tables to Dan for the weekend.  Ask Jason what a crappy person I am.  Dan was alone at his table (with no help collecting money or anything for that matter) and thankful all weekend for all of my help.  It is right that Ken and I agreed to HELP out Scott and Jason with the show. At no time did we ever state to Jason we were a security firm but I did tell him I have a strong security background. Two very different animals as you can see. Jason and Scott both agreed for us to help them try and make this show a success. Even though I really don't feel I have to publicly go into the compensation end of this whole thing, I will.  Here we go: 1) We had two tables (one we gave to Dan Severn and the other one for our signings with Jeff Jarrett and Killer Bees), 2) Money for pickups (we gave to the guys that helped us out with the runs), 3) Autographs on our own items and 4) Monetary (from Scott own pocket).  We did tell Jason that Sportstime was a good place but we also informed him of all the pitfall that it would incur. We asked him about having it at a hotel instead but he said it couldn't be done. No hotels large enough on South Shore, Nassau County of Long Island but on Long Island as a whole there are.
We posted the limited amount of staff we had at the most important areas.  Which werethe registration desk (due to money) , main entrance door, outside signing room and inside main room.  Things were changed due to certain talent saying Jason told them to come and set up shop whenever they wanted. I tried to speak to Jason about this but he told me to handle it, which I tried my best to do. Jason did put Online COA (you shouldn't have even mentioned them as those nice guys aren't happy with you) under the basketball hoop. The only problem was they needed to have electric and Jason wasn't around to find them a better spot.  I tried to do the right thing, so I gave them K&S's original spot. Jason, I guess that's another bad thing I did. Missy Hyatt and Scott Epstein were not the reason that Online COA were moved it was they needed power for their equipment. If the Boss was around he would have know that also.  Any disorganization was due to having hardly any staff but not for not trying my hardest.  I'm man enough to say that I'm ultimately to blame for any disorganization since I was running this asylum.  You said I was criticized for the work I did.  The only thing I was told by the fans, wrestlers and staff was what a great job I was doing under the circumstances and it wasn't even my show. You stated that the thing you learned from this show was to eject that mean staff that tried their best to help you. That just shows that you learned nothing at all from this venture.  The reason the staff wanted to walk out on Saturday was only after your mother berated them and accused them of letting the fans take liberties with your money.  Again another crappy thing that was done to a nice bunch of hard working people.
Jason's wants you to believe that no talent has issues with him. I can't speak for all the talent but I do know that Rikishi was leaving the show he wasn't to happy with Jason. I only know this because I was putting out that fire when Jason was missing. Ken did give Jason advice and that was to make sure he had the talents pay before hand and don't wait for the gate to pay them.  I don't know but that sounds like pretty solid advice if I should say so myself. Jason brought a petty little thing like cold water up, can you please show the talent cold water because all we were able to get for them was warm water.  Jason is right when he said that Ken would coordinated pickups but he never said he would due it with no drivers.  Why should Jason take responsibility for pickups as he doesn't want to be the blame for anything else.  On to the big shouting match I had with you and your family.  Please lets not forget this occurred only after your mother was berating the staff and I in front of everyone. I was only defending a bunch of young adults that were being treated poorly when trying to make a bad situation better.  Jason you said I had no right to be at your show but what you forget is you made it my right when you asked for my help and went into hiding.  K&S thanks you Jason for a free table (1) and autographs for our help.  As for the missing polaroid film you are barking way up the wrong tree on that accusation.  As we are in the market to purchase more film as I write this.
I did tell you to be the man after your mother came to me after the berating session and asked for my help once again.  The reason I helped you again was because your mother told me how sad she was because of all misinformation you gave her on this show.  The thing I must say here is that Jason's parents wanted the best for their son and his show. It wasn't always handled the best but they had good intentions.
The set ups for the signings were changed because we had no other choice but again you weren't around to help us out. Paying fans who were friends of mine jumped in to help with the humping of tables around since we couldn't find you to help. These so called blue prints and table mats you mention were never removed from the tables because they were never there to begin with. You say that you don't know why Ken and I were fighting at the show again because we weren't. The drivers took the talent to the hotels itinerary that we were given. That's right no blame goes to you Jason since you set up the hotel reservations. Your correct once again as the blame should fall on everyone else but you.  We tried to keep the lines a certain way but because of all the talent coming and going as they pleased I had to make the adjustments since you were gone again. Jason we were working with your and Scott's best interest at heart no matter what you might think. You say I would only listen to Scott and not you.  I would have loved to as you so nicely put it take commands from you but you weren't around. You were the best at the show and everyone else should be blamed for any problems.  You also falsely stated in your letter that K&S were partners or something like that with this show. The truth is in no way, shape or form is that true.  We were the hired help and it was all you baby.  Jason you kept trying to give me your cell phone to handle different things, so can you please tell me why the hell would you want a walkie talkie as another way to be contacted. That's right no body blame Jason on anything. With Jason not being blamed and missing this is getting old.  Hey Jason, I tried to run your line with a skeleton crew that you didn't even supply as it was all Scott's people that tried to help out the best they could . All the fans kept asking me is where you were hiding and thanks for all my hard work.  I didn't let the fans have their way with anything as you complain. I was just trying to do my job as well as yours.  We didn't have enough people to take tickets, so we did the best with what we had. That's right Jason, I was the man in charge and have no problem with that. The reason I was in charge was because you shuddered with fear at the thought of that responsibility.
Great Jason the next Turnbuckle with you, your staff and talent.  Don't forget to bring back the Turnbuckle Divas as you called them.  Those two nice young ladies told me they were pretty upset with you when they wanted to get paid but you kept running away from them.  I have a great reputation with fans, talent, promoters, vendors and such.  What you have tried to do is make me a scapegoat for this event.  That is so wrong on every level and is so very sad that you think that way.  People will see right through the garbage you threw out there and call a spade a spade.  All I did was bust my ass that  weekend to try and help you and your show and this is what I get in return. You are so sadly mistaken if you thought by attacking me I would sit back and play nice.  As you can see my friend you were so very misinformed.  When I wrote my column for Wrestling Figs, I told the truth and did my best to let the people know that you weren't a bad person.  On your first chance you get  to speak your mind you handled it in such a better way. NOT.  I'm so very glad that I helped you out, as you have shown such great appreciation for all my trouble.  I don't even have to defend Scott here because I'm sure he will be having plenty to say on this matter soon enough.  In closing, Jason you question somebody as respected in the wrestling business as Georgie, if that doesn't sum up this whole sad little mess, I don't know what does.

Thanks

Steve

Turnbuckle Turmoil?

9/3/07 Georgie it was great speaking to you on Sunday at length with regard to all the controversy surrounding Turnbuckle Promotions Megafest weekend. First, it should be stated right here and now that Scott and Jason tried their best to make a great weekend for all the fans. This was supposed to be a great time had by all with no malicious intent by either Scott or Jason. Both are good guys, who just got overwhelmed by an overbooked event. This is the truth, contrary to what some people out there want you to believe. Some websites and message board writers love a car wreck, but in the end this was not as bad as they are trying to make it sound. That's why this will be very, very long and I will try to cover, rebut and report the truth on as much as I can. I don't want to give you all a fluff piece but I also don't want to kill people like some websites do. So before I go any further, I would like to thank some people who tried their best to assist me in making this weekend a success.

I would like to first thank some good friends of mine and VIP members Ben, Dan, Zig and Mike. At times they put aside getting their own items signed in order to help me out and keep this event in order. VIP member & Figs report Anthony for barely getting anything signed but still pitching in big time all weekend. My son Conner for being at my side and helping whenever needed. My partner Ken, Chris "Maestro", Joe, Jared, John, Mike & Joey for handling all the crazy transportation situations. John, Chris and Brian for always helping out K&S when needed. Danielle of Sports Time for going way beyond her job to help us all weekend. And finally to the security/polaroid staff that Scott Epstein put together -- Brandon, Jen, Baby Scott, Greg, Teddy, Bob, Deanna and Jeremy. A final thank you to anyone who lent me a hand this weekend that I may have left off this list, as I have to move on since the people reading this are thinking enough already.

I'm going to start from the beginning, so everyone understands how this all unfolded. A few months ago Ken and I spoke with Scott and Jason about helping them anyway we could with making this weekend happen. It was decided that Ken & I would put out flyers at indy shows & in stores, Ken would handle the transportation team, I would assist with the autograph line, as Scott & Jason would have their hands full working out booking and financial aspects of their show. As time passed Ken and I both became concerned with the overbooking of this show, but we could only try by voicing our opinions, since in the end this was Jason's show. As show day approached, Jason became difficult with us about obtaining contact numbers for the talent that needed pickups. This was a struggle until I spoke with Scott about clearing up this problem, and finally we did get all the numbers we needed. I believe Jason was trying to exert his control over the show even though he really knew he was in over his head.

Thursday before the show came and Ken, Chris "Maestro" and myself took care of a delayed-filled day of flight pickups, and by day's end we had all our pickups complete. Did all go smoothly? No. Were there delays and problems with directions? Yes. Were cars unairconditioined, adding stress to a stressful situation? Yes. Were hotel reservations screwed up? Yes. In short, we all did our best to make a bad situation better. A special thanks to Terry Funk, Shelly Martinez, Scott Hall, Goldylocks and Baby Doll for being class acts! No primadonnas in that bunch! Jason's lack of an appearance on day one was a foreshadowing of things to come. We dealt with Scott on pickups as Jason was simply not around when problems had to be dealt with. I would have jumped ship then if I had known that this was the calm before the storm. Of course that isn't true. I knew I had given my word to help out and I would stick it out now matter what.

Friday morning arrived and the lack of order was evident right away. Jason and Scott were both overwhelmed by this overbooked and understaffed show. After speaking to both Jason and Scott, it was decided that I would be running this show. With a strong security background, people-friendly, diplomatic personality and my experience, Scott and Jason felt confident I would be the best man for the job. Ken and his small crew's day would consist of pickups and Jeff Jarrett & Killer Bees signings. Delayed flights and long airport waits caused major headaches with the signing schedules. Despite some claims of worker's being unreliable, the real problem was understaffing. Bruno, Dan Severn (who was there and not a no show as falsely reported) and Sika should be commended as they showed themselves to be true professionals. Jason's dad, Bruce, tried his very best to handle the (yes) slow moving registration table. Ben jumped in helping things move a little better to get this day started. My day was very tough due to the lack of experience of the staff, who clearly were not prepared to enter the lion's den known as a convention autograph line. It was a tough go in the beginning as the staff was confused about whether or not they needed to go to me or Scott and Jason for guidance. As the morning progressed things started to come together as the staff saw that we all had the same goal in mind, making this show a success. These young adults did their very best to handle this unfamiliar situation. Problems were made worse when we only had five polaroid cameras to work with and not enough sharpies. This slowed the lines down even more as you can imagine. When I spoke with Jason on this matter I was informed that this was all he had and to do the best I could. At this same time Scott was being pulled every different way on his end as Jason was indecisive and unsure about most questions I posed to him. This was when I really knew that Jason was totally overwhelmed and running scared. He clearly did not want to deal with any problems at all. I decided then I would have to step up and take charge of as much as I could in to give the fans the fun-filled weekend they were expecting. I agree that lines moved slow, things were out of order at times, polaroids took time and there was much confusion. To add to the other confusion, the talent was unsure of their proper signing times and the venue was just too small for the amount of talent that was there. Jason had so many different deals with how and when the talent could sign on their own, that control was constantly lost. Talent would come in whenever they wanted and sell items on their own time to make extra money, causing even more confusion for the fans and staff. I spoke with Jason on this matter and received a blank stare. I had no choice but to let it be and deal with it.

To add to our troubles the fire marshall got involved claiming the venue was way to small to handle this event. Another key mistake by Jason. Ken spoke with Jason many times about moving this show to a bigger venue, but there was no changing his mind. Also, we had to keep clearing the room after each session. After the second session the tennis courts were opened up to handle signing three. So with the help of the staff, VIP friends and other volunteers, we opened up two rooms for the signings for the rest of the weekend. At least this made things move quicker. Again I agree we had problems with this set up due to VIP+,VIP and GA all being mixed up at times. The other main problem was Jason continuing pulling disappearing acts all day and not wanting to deal with any of the major problems at hand. If this day wasn't crazy enough the fun was really going to begin at the start of session 3. Bruno arrived a little bothered due to having to wait way too long at the airport. I found out later that the person that Jason sent to get him, got to the airport, found out the flight was delayed and then left without informing anyone. Not knowing this I had sent someone else to get him and bring him to the venue. I met Bruno at the door and got him settled for his signing and he was professional and appreciative. At the same time Jason gave me his phone to speak with Dan Severn about picking him up at the airport. This was another matter that Jason just couldn't deal with. I told Dan that Ken would get him right away and he was very understanding. When Dan arrived he needed to speak with Jason on how his signing would be handled. Jason told me to take care of it as he had no 8x10's for Dan to sign and said it was fine for him to sell his own items. The "Beast" was a gentleman and had a great weekend for himself. I went to the tennis courts to try and handle the unhappy arrival of Hall/Nash/Waltman/Lita. I was informed by the staff that Jason couldn't be found to pay the Wolfpac as he made the deal to pay them before their signing began. I tried to speak with them but it became a very difficult and imposing matter to handle. I decided not to back away and get the same respect from them as they wanted from me. This situation was kept under control thanks to Scott Hall's input. The two of us maintained a great working relationship this whole weekend. I told Jason about this problem but again he deferred to me to take care of this problem, which I did. Even though the Wolfpac was bothered by this situation they treated the fans wonderfully, so hats off to them for that. Another dispute arose because Lita was upset aboutl not receiving her pay. Lita and Waltman didn't want to hear from me, only from Jason. Scott Epstein was brought to the room to hash things out with them. We finished up a great signing with awesome guests in Billy Graham and Bruno. Even late in the eventing problems kept recurring with Lita & Waltman. I jumped in to see what I could due for them. I took them to Jason and his mother so this matter could be resolved by them as I didn't want anything to do with their situation any more. I was told later that in the end all were made happy.

Saturday hit rock bottom at the start as Mrs. Blaustein, not really understanding what was going on, attacked me and the staff accusing us of allowing fans to take liberties with her son's show. I got into heated discussions with the Blaustein family with regard to this unwarranted attacks on our character. I decided to step away and let Mama Blaustein handle the mess she just created. All control was totally lost when the talent started arriving for unscheduled signings courtesy of Jason. Mrs. Blaustein was handling this event by yelling at anyone that was in her way. Jason was still hiding out and letting his mother make more of a mess of this show. I told the staff that the Blausteins were now running this show and not me. They were not happy about this turn of events but stayed on board out of loyalty to Scott. I also stayed in the venue for Scott, staff and fans. At the end of session one a distraught Mrs. Blaustein came to me still not understanding why everyone was so angry with her. I set her straight about how damaging her false accusations could be and how her own son's refusal to responsibility for his own mess was at the root of all the show's problems. She then confronted Jason and admitted all that what I had told his mother was true. Mrs. Blaustein apologized for her remarks and asked me to please take over again. I told Jason it wasn't too late to stand up and take responsibility for all the problems of the show.

Things moved much better the rest of the day due to two rooms being used. I heard Scott was having a problem with Nash due to a mistake in not booking him a hotel room. Scott was trying his best to make Nash happy but nothing seemed to work. Another problem arose as Rikishi needed his pay for the day. He was very understanding when I explained my limited ability to help because I was a middle man just trying to help solve his problem. I think his friendship with the Godfather, who I recently worked with helped ease things with Jason so he could take care of their problem. Jason was running around getting items signed to sell after the show was over. Did he get some of his own items signed? Yes he did but that is his right since he was paying the bill. Even though he was doing this, he was around when I needed him for the rest of the show.

I'm very sorry that this has become a novel but I'm really trying my hardest to set the record straight about any misconceptions about this show. I will rattle some stuff off at this time to cover as much as I can to end this. Feel free to email me at wrestlefest05@hotmail.com if I missed something you would like a response on. Dealing with this much talent there will be problems on every level. There were screw ups with hotels, talent times, payments, waiting for rides, long lines, delays, not enough polaroid cameras & sharpies, too many tickets & pictures made, too many different VIP+/VIP/GA/Etc, not enough staff, too many different hotels, a small venue and much confusion but it was not for lack of trying. In the end most was taken care of and handled in the best possible way. I had many dealings this weekend with fans, talent, agents, vendors, Sports Time and so much more but in the end I think most were happy with the outcome. I'm not saying everyone came away happy as I do know of a bunch of complaints and refunds owned. Jason did make deals he thought he could keep, handle situations he couldn't and was just so overwhelmed by the whole weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Blaustein tried to help but were in way over their head. Scott was also overwhelmed at times but tried his best to help where he could. Scott has also been trying his best to fix any problems that have been brought to his attention. One problem he handled was paying Christy Hemme the pay she was owed. Right now Jason is still overwhelmed by the past weekend but I think he will try and fix the problems brought to his attention. In closing my novel I would like to do some word association since I had dealing both in front of and behind the scenes with almost everyone. This might give you all a final idea about what really goes on with these shows.

Thanks Again To All
